Tithing or tipping.
I never had heard it said this way before; it struck me.
Growth in giving doesn’t come automatically at conversion.
Every believer needs instruction on what is God-pleasing.
I’ve noticed that restaurants suggest tipping percentages: 20 or 15 percent.
What about your Lord?
He doesn’t suggest tipping as an afterthought reflection.
The bible talks about “first giving.” Paul tells the young Christian church in Corinth, “On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper…” (1 Cor. 16:2).
Note the “first day of the week,” a planned giving of forethought.
Tithing is an act of faith, trusting in the good Lord to provide.
As to percentage, the Small Catechism suggests this.
“In Christian freedom, a wise person once determined early in life to live on 80 percent of his income while saving 10 percent and giving 10 percent to church and charity. At the end of life, this person was both generous and wealthy,” (p. 109).
