FNATM Returns This September

What is this ministry all about?

Friday Night at the Movies is intended for anyone who enjoys good films and good faith-based discussions. It exists to engage the culture in which we live so that we can more effectively share the Gospel with those who do not have a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

How do movies help me "...Tell the Story"?

Movies provide you with a greater awareness of our surrounding culture's stories and its language. What's more, viewing popular movies can help you to "translate" the message of God's grace and forgiveness into images, language, and stories that are easily accessible to people who are not connected to a Christian church and its culture and language. St. Paul even quoted Greek poets and playwrights in his letters and speeches in order to relate the Gospel message to a non-Christian audience: Why not movies today?

What movies will we be seeing and why?

The movies you will see this Fall have been specially selected to tell a specific story as it relates to secular society as well as instructs us in human behavior. This selection includes certain films from the American Film Institute's (AFI) - Best 100 Films of All Time. Each movie will be shown in its entirety followed by a discussion of both secular and Christian principles presented in the film and how each relate to the Bible and the Christian Life. So, here they are, enjoy the show.

September 17

"Citizen Kane" - 1941  (AFI #1)
MPAA Rating: None, but suitable for families
Citizen Kane, the film, is many things. It is a brilliantly crafted series of flashbacks and remembrances. It is an engaging story of a dynamic man in a dynamic world. It is a remarkable statement for the wide range of time periods that it covers. It is a deceptively simple story centering on perhaps the most meaningful word in all of moviedom. Behind all that, Citizen Kane is the American cinema. There is not a major director today who has not been influenced by the genius Orson Welles put forth in his debut masterpiece. The film centers around a group of reporters investigating the origin of the dying newspaper tycoon (loosely based on William Randolph Hearst), Charles Foster Kane's last word: Rosebud. The movie begins with an unforgettable newsreel montage summarizing the man's life.
